Teeth Whitening in Howick

If you hesitate to smile due to tarnished teeth, we offer a fantastic solution: professional teeth whitening. This popular cosmetic dental procedure can enhance the appearance of your smile by brightening and lightening the colour of your teeth.

It’s suitable for most adults with good overall health and no underlying dental conditions like decay, cavities, sensitivity, or gum disease. While this cosmetic service is typically recommended for adults, it can also be considered for individuals under 18 if the circumstances are appropriate.

How to Prepare for Your Treatment

Before undergoing treatment to brighten your smile, it’s important to schedule a full dental oral health examination to rule out any underlying conditions that might interfere with the brightening process or worsen as a result of exposure to the whitening agent. The examination will check for tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities, which must be addressed before the whitening treatment begins.

What Are the Different Options?

Teeth brightening involves the application of whitening agents, primarily in the form of gels, strips, or toothpaste, to lighten the shade or colour of the teeth and improve their appearance. There are four main ways to brighten teeth:

Over-the-counter products: These include whitening toothpastes and strips that can be purchased at a supermarket or ordered online. While these products are more affordable and accessible, they often have a lower concentration of whitening agents and may not be as effective as professional treatments.

Professional: If you choose this option, we will take an intraoral digital scan or mold of your teeth to create custom whitening trays.

The trays and the whitening gel will be given to you, along with detailed instructions on how to use them. The gel is typically used for 15 to 45 minutes daily for about two weeks, with results becoming noticeable during this period.

In-office: This method offers quicker results by applying a stronger whitening gel to the teeth during a dental appointment. The procedure takes about an hour to an hour and a half, and most of the whitening is achieved during this time. Proper precautions are taken to protect the gums, lips, and cheeks from the strong gel.

Combination approach: We consider this option the “Rolls-Royce” approach as patients undergo the in-office treatment for faster results and then receive custom trays to continue the whitening process at home. This approach provides optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any risks or complications that might occur during this procedure?

When whitening chemicals contact the cheek or lip areas, which is unavoidable, it can result in minor irritation and temporary white patches on the areas where the chemicals contact these soft parts of the mouth.

All forms of whitening are also associated with some degree of sensitivity to the teeth. To address this issue, we use whitening agents that have inbuilt desensitisers.

Another potential issue is regarding white spots. Sometimes people have pre-existing white spots on their teeth that can become more pronounced. So some parts of teeth will become whiter than other parts of the same tooth.

Lastly, treatment will not whiten existing fillings, crowns, or any other work that has been done that is not natural teeth.

Will I get the results I want?

Individual results always vary; some people will achieve fantastic results, while others may not get the results they’d hoped for.

Are there any alternative procedures that get similar results?

Porcelain veneers can improve the appearance or whiteness of the teeth. However, they can cost more, often involving shaving away some part of healthy tooth structure.
